Richmond United FC Confirms David Thorburn as Technical Director

RICHMOND, BC– Richmond United FC proudly announces the appointment of renowned player development expert, David Thorburn, as the club’s Technical Director. The appointment comes as a result of an exhaustive process by the RUFC Technical Committee, emphasizing their commitment to elevate the club’s stature and success on the national stage.

Thorburn, having shown his technical knowledge and diligence firsthand as Richmond FC’s Technical Director for the past two seasons, brings with him an unmatched legacy, having held prestigious roles at clubs like Whitby Iriqouis’ Soccer Club and Aurora Youth Soccer Club. Both of these Ontario-based clubs saw unparalleled achievements, including national titles, under his leadership.

Thorburn’s coaching qualifications include the UEFA (A) International License, UEFA (B) License, UEFA Youth License and the UEFA Children’s License. With a career spanning over three decades in soccer, Thorburn’s credentials as a professional player, coach, manager, chief scout, and international player agent have made him one of the most sought-after Technical Directors in Canada. His international accolades include collaborations with clubs such as Glasgow Rangers, Aberdeen, and Greenock Morton, and important roles within the Scottish and English FA in youth development.

RUFC was determined to engage in a deep process to ensure the club would be led by the best team available going forward. The RUFC Technical Committee engaged with Thorburn and were presented with a detailed plan for the future growth of the club that confirmed him as by far the best person for the job.

RUFC Technical Committee member Andy Cobbold said, “We met with David and had him present his plan for the TD role and how he would approach it, and he took us through his approach to coach and player development as well as coach and player assessment. It was a wide-ranging conversation that thoroughly impressed all of us, most particularly because of the amount of work and detail he has already put into building materials that will ensure our coaches and players get the training and support they need to be successful.”

The executive team backing Thorburn was unanimous in his appointment. He will quickly begin work on bringing both of the legacy programs together into one organizational structure in time for the next Spring season.
